CBLT report and communicative exam

REPORT ABOUT CBLT

Day by day, it has been pointed out and it is well known that students learn better when they are exposed in real life situations, with real language. Said that, the question should be if we, as English teacher and taking into account how important is the learning of a second language, do we really teach in that way? If so, do we do it in the right way? The answer for most of the cases is probably not.
I think that in our region we still lack on not using good strategies but using them in the right way.
After reading the chapter about Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBLT) , I realized in my daily teaching, I put attention on some aspects mentioned in it such as students’ needs, but I need to improve much more all the aspects involved when teaching (materials, activities; students’ role) in order to make more effective the language learning process.
What really called my attention when reading was that Competency-Based Education (CBE), where CBLT started, focuses on the outcomes of the learning, what students are expected to do, what they do with the language in life role situations.
In order to understand better what CBLT is about, I decided to sum up the chapter

· COMPETENCY-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING

CBE (Competency-Based Education)
o Is an educational movement that focuses on the outcomes or outputs of learning in the development of language programs.
o Competencies differ from other student goals and objectives in that they describe the students’ ability to apply basic and other skills in situations that are commonly encountered in everyday life
Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBLT)
o Is an application of the principles of Competency-Based Education to language teaching

CBLT (Competency Based Language Teaching)
o Is Base on the nature of language.
o Teach language in relation with society, how they use it.
o It’s shared with behaviorist (depends on the learners situation.)
o Language can be analyzed into parts and subpart and they can be tested incrementally.
o Develops functional communication skills in learners, known of specific real-world task.
Docking(1994)
Syllabus
§ They point out to plan the syllabus according to the material it’s going to be taught, contribution of knowledge field, objectives, assessment based on norms, and a scale of scores of their expectation.
CBT
o It focuses on what students know about language to what they can do with it.

Competencies consist of activities related with the real life situations for surviving social environment.
§ Task performance
§ Safety
§ General word-related
§ Work schedules, times sheets, paychecks
§ Social language
§ Job application
§ Job interview
Auerbach 1986
o Identifies eight key of the implementation of CBE programs in ESL, this factors are:
· A focus on successful functioning in society. Enable students to become autonomous individuals capable of coping with the demands of the world.
o A focus on life skills.
· Students are taught just those language forms/skills required by the situations in which they will function.
o Task-or performance-centered orientation.
· Behavior rather than on knowledge or the ability to talk about language skills.
o Modularized instruction.
· Objectives are broken into narrowly focused sub objectives so that both teachers and students can get a clear sense of progress.

o Outcomes that are made explicit a priori.
· Outcomes are public knowledge, known and agreed upon by both learner and teacher.
o Continuous and ongoing assessment.
· Program evaluation is based on test results and, as such, is considered objectively quantifiable.
o Demonstrated mastery of performance objectives.
· Base on the ability to demonstrate prespecified behaviors.
o Individualized, student-centered instruction.
· Prior learning and achievement are taken into account in developing curricula.

Taking into consideration all mentioned above, teaching and learning English must be specially focused on students, putting a lot of attention on what students can do with the language inside and outside the classroom, having in mind that they are not what they learn but how they use it. Also, work hard on improving all involved in the learning process such as syllabus, materials, activities, and so on, in order to make students to achieve all the goals and purposes they have.
In other words that student can perform in any social life situation where they have and specific role, remember that CBLT is based on a functional and interactional perspective on the nature of language, and then they can infer the language from the context.
Finally, it can be said that CBLT is a useful approach and teachers should take a look on it and try to take advantage on all the benefits it has.
“It can confidently be said, as we enter a new millennium, that the business of improving learning competencies and skills will remain one of the world’s fastest growing industries and priorities”.
